I just went Snowmobiling for the first time since I was a kid. It was a lot of fun. Northern Wisconsin had maybe 16 inches of fluff which made going through my folks’ fields interesting. Trails opened last weekend I believe. Normally there isn’t enough snow until March if at all so this is super early. So places with snow, how’s the Snowmobiling around you?

Edit: Basically asking if places that have snowmobiling if the trails are open early due to all the snow this year.

  1. We’ve got an extensive network of trails in northern Michigan, in many communities it’s a primary mode of transportation in the winter. We’ve got hundreds of miles of groomed trails just outside my front door. Now, if it would just…snow.

  2. Our snow mobiles are just jet skis. And it’s an all year event here. Lots of really cool lakes or you can go out to the ocean.

  3. Not really a big thing. When we get snow, it usually isn’t deep enough or sticks around long enough to do anything special with it. Riding 4x4s, dirt bikes, or mountain bikes are popular hobbies, but snowmobiles are not.

  4. Huge in Upper New England. We have extensive trails and people use the right of ways for the high voltage lines. I think the latter may not be fully legal but it isn’t like anyone is patrolling them.

A ton of people up in northern Maine snowmobile and it’s apparently quite good. You have to be careful though because it is all densely forested.

The most fun I have had snowmobiling is up in the cascades near Bend, OR. Shit tons of great powdery fresh snow and a lot of topography.

  5. We’ve had below average snowfall so far this winter. Not even measurable amounts, really. The ski slopes are making snow but there’s nothing natural.

  6. Not great yet in the valleys. A couple thousand feet up looks like it would be fabulous though.

  7. Obviously none here in San Diego, but it is amazing in parts of Northern California. The mountain pass near where I grew up gets closed every winter because it is pretty remote and it is too time intensive and treacherous to plow it all season. The upside of that is that there are miles and miles of pristine snowmobiling right past the closure.

The pass closed in early November this year and will remain closed until Memorial Day. It will take Caltrans a LONG time to plow all that snow come May! We are approaching 30 feet of snow so far this season, which is a bit above normal, so I’m guessing it is pretty good this year!

  8. This has been the most mild winter in years so far. Even at its worst, there’s probably only a few places in northwest Jersey or NE PA for it to be worth it.

My parents live on a quarter acre.
