So me and my friend arranged to play Mario kart together over the weekend. I messaged him Saturday morning just to check if that day would be alright, he said yes but he would just do his homework as soon as possible. Around 8 hours later (mind you, I’d been constantly checking my phone for any sort of response), I decided to message “Hi. Are you ready?” just to see if he had maybe forgotten. Now it’s Sunday night for me (in the UK), and I still haven’t gotten a reply (the message was sent at half four on Saturday).

I’m quite upset that he hasn’t responded and we never got to play together. I’m also frustrated that I spent almost my entire weekend anxious waiting for a response. I don’t feel like talking to him anymore, but I don’t want to come off as a jerk and perhaps he has some amazing excuse despite WhatsApp saying my message was delivered. I don’t really know what to do so I’m asking here.

Do you think he is ignoring me on purpose? Does he not actually want to play with me and is he just trying to make an excuse? Should I punish him in a way, ghost him back, not even talk about the situation again? Am I just overreacting? I know you won’t be able to answer all my questions, these are just things I’ve been speculating about myself.

  1. He doesn’t want to play with you. Give him some space, let him contact you. There was no reason for you to waste your weekend waiting around. Should he have just said he didn’t want to play or have time? Sure. But you had no reason to wait by the phone. Go about your life unless you have specific plans laid out, like playing at 3:00 on Saturday. Even then, it’s still not something to get so worked up about, it was video games.
