I was laid off one week ago with 3 months severance and a decent emergency savings account, I probably have about 6 months of runway without dipping in to my retirement/401k savings.

I’m scared that I should start looking for a job ASAP but I’m also burnt the fuck out from 7 years of tech work without a break.

I want to take a few months off but I’m also afraid of becoming irrelevant and entering a recession unemployed.

My main issue is **I don’t know how I’d spend my time off.**

I don’t even know what my hobbies are other than fitness and videogames, I just sit around now as if I were at work but now I’m not working. It’s quite sad and depressing, but looking for a job also feels absolutely awful right now.

Any tips from people that were laid off and either took time off or went right back in to the grind?

  1. I am in a fairly specific line of work. So when I got laid off I wanted to take some time off but decided I should at least apply for current job openings.

There were only 3 within the range I was willing to drive. So I applied and interviewed and had two job offers in less than week of being laid off. So I did get 2 weeks off total.

  2. A younger buddy of mine purposely takes jobs at small startups during the fall/winter in the hopes that the company collapses by the beginning of summer so that he can get severance and spend the summer golfing.

He has done this successfully 2 years in a row.
