Hi, I’m a guy who has gets cold sores, I know not to make any kind of contact when I do get them. Is it safe to make any kind of contact when there are no sores at all? And if they can would I not even be able to suck somebodies’ nipples even?

  1. It’s referred to as viral shedding. It is possible to pass it on, however there are a few factors that go into the frequency of occurrence. The biggest issue is how widespread oral herpes is. That’s part of why most STI tests don’t include herpes by default. It would cause a lot of distress.

The key factor is that you need to be in a position to shed the virus and then make contact with an opening in the person’s skin or a semi-permiable membrane: the nose, eyes, lips, or genitals. You shouldn’t need to worry about the nipples, but kissing can definitely pass it on.
