Common interests are the way to go man
With people you know it should be enough to show genuine interest, listen to what they have to say, get to know them and build upon that.
With people you’ve just met it should be enough to show genuine interest, listen to what they have to say, get to know them and build upon that.

Not really a joke though. You need to ask questions relevant to your interests and be observing of their interests from the answers they provide. Hit a conversation dead end? move on to the next topic. Hobbies/passions are the best topics in my experience. Find common ground, build upon that, make friends. People love to talk about themselves so usually is more about how you listen than what you say, yet you need to share enough so that people you talk to feel comfortable about sharing their stories with you. Respect boundaries, learn to read social ques, be present. That is all I got time for. Hope it helps
