So I have had a speech impediment since elementary school—the main trouble is with pronouncing “r’s”. I attended speech and all of that to help but I guess it only partially worked. Fast forward to today in my 2nd year of college, and still, some people I meet think I have an “accent.” One recent example is a girl I went on a date with who was set on the idea that I had an accent of some kind. I guess I am too self-conscious to explain that it’s actually a speech impediment, so I always tell some made-up excuse or change the subject.

I am very troubled with telling people I have a speech impediment at 20 yrs old—especially to a girl on a date. What should I do? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
