Context im an ambivert (extrovert with introverted tendencies) Ironically majored in communication studies, and I just started a new job that I love and want to keep.

The people I work with love to go on long spouts of information dumps about how to do the job or about themselves, and I enjoy listening and soaking up the information. But I always reply with “ok” or a chuckle.

I can see them visibly getting upset, and I wish I knew what to say. Questions don’t pop up in my head, no comments, or sayings. All I can do is just acknowledge that they said words and then process said words.

Any tips and tricks to make conversations less awkward and what to say when you’re being given new information?

  1. If they’re info dumping do you get the impression that they’re expecting questions or a conversation?

If not, then perhaps come up with some alternative affirmations. So instead of just saying “ok”. You could say “That’s really interesting” for example.

If they are then one way of showing you’re listening is simply to summarise what they’re saying and confirm that you’ve got it.
