I have a question and I am sorry if I come off as naive. Is it commonplace for a man’s secretary to sign taxes on behalf of the wife? I’m guessing that’s forgery? (Wife did not give permission or know)

  1. A big, glaring, absolute NO GO!

Your husband knows this but chose the easy illegal way out.

  2. Totally illegal.

Would he be fine if his secretary had signed your name to a credit card application and ran it up to $5000? How is that any different than pretending to be you when filing taxes? Your signature means that you agree with whatever was stated.

It’s wrong. It’s illegal. You are not wrong for being upset about someone pretending to be you.

She didn’t even ask for your consent to sign on your behalf. That’s really messed up.

  3. What you are signing when you sign that tax return is that you agree with how those taxes were prepared and are ready to assume responsibility if anything on them is fraudulent. You can lose everything and go to jail based on that signature.

  4. If someone signs your name and they are not you that is forgery. She should be fired.

  5. Never under any circumstances should anyone sign someone else’s name. Even someone with power of attorney signs their own name as PA. You never sign someone else’s.
