I was at a birthday party today and i had small talks with some acquaintances here and there. I’ve noticed that some (few, luckily) conversations were smooth until it was my “turn” to say something. I’m not socially inept, nor i said anything weird or out of context but still they didn’t catch up on anything i said, instead they shyly switched back to repeat the same concept they already talked about. Maybe I’m rusty, but is it possible they ONLY cared about what they had to say? Of course you guys would need some more context, but nevertheless is there anything I’m missing?

  1. Most people only care about what they have to say. Ask questions about the person instead for a more engaged conversation (might be boring to you though.)

  2. Oh man, I wish I could have seen that conversation to say for sure. One thing I notice sometimes is that when I say something naturally into the conversation, does the other people get this look on their face like I distracted them from their infinitely important thought track all about themselves, and they have to work to get back on it.
