How often do you get paid at your job? Can you decide it?

  1. The frequency is set by the employer. The employee knows this upon accepting the job

  2. Jobs can pay weekly, biweekly, monthly, or semi-monthly (which is not the same thing as biweekly)

The vast majority pay biweekly, and it is exclusively the employer who sets the pay period.

  3. Pay laws in the US will vary by state, and sometimes region, including frequency. So employers have to follow the applicable regulations for pay frequency.

Generally frequency is weekly, biweekly (every other week), semi monthly (twice a month) or monthly.

Employees have absolutely no say in the frequency they are paid.

  4. Every other Friday (though my bank now allows me to access my pay two days early). This usually means I get paid twice a month, but twice a year, I get paid three times in one month. And no, I don’t have control over this.

  5. Monthly. Can’t choose. However most of us are on nine month contracts so we can either be paid over nine months or spread that over 12.

  6. I get paid every other week. Your ability to decide is based on your ability to pick between jobs that offer different pay schedules.
