Hey men! Where can my husband get an all-occasions suit? Like for weddings, funerals, job interviews, and dates. Would y’all recommend him get one somewhere standard and then have it tailored by someone else? Or get one custom made? He is very slim and will need the suit to be tailored to perfection.

Edit for budget: $300 ish. Mostly concerned about finding something slim enough for him, even before it gets tailored.

  1. Just search Made to Measure in your area.

A tailored suit will be a little more, but those who know. Know.

Up to you what you are wishing to accomplish.

  2. Look up suit stores on google, your city should have a few, I basically just went to the store, they took my measurements, we tried out a few suits that I liked in my size, then the tailor makes adjustments as needed.

A full on custom suit would generally be way more expensive.

  3. I recommend Suit Supply, really great bang for your buck.

They offer a made to measure service as well but I have no experience with that. I just oder regular sizes and take it to a local tailor to get the fit just right.

  4. A bespoke (custom made) suit would cost a great deal more. The typical thing for a cost-conscious person is to get one off the rack and then have it tailored, that kind of tailoring is not very expensive at all.

If you want a good suit for cheap, there are certain discount stores that you can go to. Although that’s going to depend on where you live.

  5. Without knowing a price range, can range from Goodwill/Salvation Army and a local tailor, any old department or clothing store like Macy’s, Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, etc, or custom-made by a local company or something like Indochino

  6. He can likely get away with off-the-rack with some tailoring. Retail chains like Mens Wearhouse & Joseph A. Banks are fine. Department stores like Macy’s or Nordstrom will have some higher end/more fashionable stuff.

For the list of events you mentioned, I would go with a good charcoal gray.

  7. First, you’re going to need a passport. Then, you’re going to need to purchase a plane ticket to Hanoi, Vietnam. From there, take the train to Da Nang. Hop on a short bus ride to Hoi An. In Hoi An, you can get a custom made suit with the fabrics of your choosing for about $100 per suit. They’re made in about 24 hours and will fit him perfectly. Plus you get a sweet trip out of the deal!

  8. So many places, it can’t really be properly answered without knowing a budget.

If the budget is unlimited, absolutely get a custom suit.

If it isn’t, there are all kinds of cost levels to choose from. You can spend $200 at Kohls or JCPenney, or thousands at a fancier store, and everything in between.

Then you take that off the rack suit to a tailor and have it altered.

  9. Nordstrom Rack! Most of their stores offer tailoring services, just ask. Great name brand suits options for affordable price.

  10. I’ve had good experience with Indochino. A bit more than off the rack but nowhere near as expensive as bespoke.

  11. You can really get that anywhere.l you can get a 100$ suit off the rack at Macy or spend 10k on a bespoke suit from huntsman. I would recommend doing something made to measure as you’re more likely to nail the fit and keep costs reasonable. Do one in person if you can, so this really depends on your area if you have local tailors or a chain like Indochino or suitsupply. Fabric for all purpose suit probably some darker gray or navy. Maybe do a 3 piece for some additional outfit flexibility.

There is also a difference between what is often called custom and true bespoke. Most custom you’ll find is actually made to measure. You spend a lot more for bespoke.

  12. Go to a tuxedo rental shop – most of them also sell suits, or may also sell a gently used rental suit for reasonable. I have several very high-end suits that would have cost $600-700 new that I picked up for 1/3 of that from a rental place I trust.

I think every man should own a basic simple tuxedo as well. They’re cheaper than you think, and you’ll wear it more often if you have one – formal events, balls, galas, etc.

  13. If you’re in the UK then I recommend Slaters as the offer free alternations/basic tailoring.

  14. I buy every suit at Jos. A. Banks. The one I frequent has free tailoring if you purchase the whole suit.

  15. I’ve always went for tailor made ones as I’m also pretty tall and slim.

The most important aspect in a suit is the fit. Brands don’t really matter unless you’re looking for better quality, which for the average Joe is a waste of time.

With that budget it might be hard to find one however. My last one cost me about $1000, but its a really established brand.

  16. I would go to Nordstrom. They’re expensive, but it will last a decade or more. The people there are good at helping you get the right one the first time.

  17. With that budget, depending on your area I would look for something like men’s warehouse or suit wholesalers then take it to a tailor for any alterations.

  18. Marks&Spencers has some nice suits for slim men, but not all M&S’s will have that department.

  19. I bought my last suit from a couple of Irish tailors working out of a garage in east London.

  20. Ask your local subreddit about stores in your area that have suits on the lower end of the budget. K&G in my area sells suits at the lower price range better than places like Men’s Wearhouse. Burlington has a small stock of suit jackets worth checking out in addition to the rest of the suit that you can find. However, Burlington functions as a discounter, not a suit shop so you’ll be mixing.

    Check out K&G, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Macy’s
