So lately a bunch of people have been calling me by a variation of my name. Think of it like how someone named Debra might be called Debbie or Deb. I really do not like it. How can I get people to stop. I’ve already corrected one person and they said “ oh my gosh I’m so sorry”. A week later they were back at it again. Can I get some feedback?

  1. I would just accept whatever they call me, even if i don’t like it. Also if you’re telling people not to call you something be careful of how you say that, it might come across as arrogant

  2. First, do it again one last time. The mean thing after that is to respond by calling them some variation of their name that they don’t like. Or just refuse to answer to something that’s not your name – “Oh, you were talking to me? I’m not Debbie, I’m Debra.”

  3. Approach them individually and privately to let them know that it bothers you, you’d like them to stop, and what you’d like to be called. You might have to do this more than once because people are creatures of habit.

  4. Tell them again. “I really don’t like being called…. Could you call me ….. please”. And remind them every time they do it.
