Me and another student from my class at university (that i have just gotten to know, and dont know very well) was talking on discord about studying and stuff, and everything was good. We talked about all kinds of things and was joking and had fun. Then i asked them about their name, because i didnt know their ethnicity, and i could tell from that persons name they werent native to the country we both reside in now (ethnicity wise, at least). And they asked back “how do you know my name isnt {nationality/ ethnicity}?

And the thing is, i knew that person was just messing/ kidding with me. But then i still explained that you could just tell from that persons name, and as i was explaining this, the other person laughed, and at the same time i sort of doubled down on my explanation. The thing is, I think i sounded SUPER defensive or something, because shortly after, the other student clarified: “Omg i was just messing/ kidding with you. Yes I am actually a {other ethnicity}.”

After this i had super anxiety that i sounded too defensive, and am afraid i almost sounded offended, which is not what i intended. I pretended like nothing and we kept on talking for 30+ mins, but i just had a creeping awkward feeling the whole time.

**I dont want the other person to think i am someone who you cant make jokes to, and that i am easily offended over stuff, and as i am writing this i have terrible anxiety. Because i actually really like this other student, but now i feel like i have messed up a potential friendship or something.**

  1. The best thing I believe you can do with this situation is explain. The truth is always better through by that it seems your not good at making jokes lol you should simply tell them your not the best at jokes and sorry if it sounded awkward or something similar to that
