I have lived my whole life never believing anything people say. It’s a running joke among my friends that I see scam in everything and everyone. Is it true that people believe what they hear. It’s especially strange for me because I never believe anyone compliments and never give compliments because it seems insincere but every book says to be generous in your compliments.

  1. I question a lot of what I hear and stay neutral about a lot of it–same for liking people or not. Something like 60% neutral (i.e. wait and see, not caring one way or the other, or something along those lines), 30% questioning in my head or out loud and 10% believe. When it comes to liking people or not, I’m probably 80-90% neutral with strangers and people I barely know.

I do think other people tend to take people at face value because they want to believe the best of others–it’d make living in the world hard for them if they didn’t, i.e. they’d feel depression or anxiety. I, on the other hand, think most people are assholes, full of shit or both, and can make it through my days just fine believing most people are garbage.
