I was looking to see if there is a correlation between oxytocin (bonding hormone produced by the brain during sex) and drug and alcohol addiction.

Here’s something I found:

* heroin addiction prevents the brain from producing oxytocin leading to antisocial behaviour (antisocial refers to criminal behaviours: stealing, arson, murder etc)
* use of intranasal oxytocin was helpful in withdrawal from nicotine and meth addiction
* alcoholics produce elevated oxytocin levels

Hence, alcoholics tend to bond more strongly with people, whereas heroin addicts have an inability or decreased ability to bond with people during sex

Thoughts? What are some weird facts you’ve discovered lately?

  1. Based upon my sample study of one…yeah, that probably tracks (heh)

In that same vein (heh), I just learned that “rocks pours” at bars generally include more liquor and the customer gets charged more, and this is almost a universal thing. Blew my mind.
