FWIW, I’ve never been to an engagement party. They’re not very common.
I’ve been to tons of weddings. Some songs are very regional, in western New York…Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” was played every time. It blew my mind. An example of something more universal would be Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”, usually played around the time the bouquet is thrown.
I’ve never been to an engagement party.
“My Eyes Don’t Cry” by Stevie Wonder has been played at every local wedding reception with music by a DJ that I’ve attended. It’s always accompanied by the Detroit Hustle: https://www.cvideosolutions.com/bridesguide/-origins-of-the-detroit-hustle-dance-a-staple-of-any-good-wedding
I’ve never heard of an engagement party, or do you mean something like bachelor/bachelorette party?
From the way you’ve asked this, it sounds like engagement parties may be a lot less formal/important in the US than in your country. I’ve only ever been to one engagement party (my own) and it was just ~50 friends and family in my parents’ house with some meat and cheese trays from Costco.
In terms of wedding songs, I don’t think I’ve been to a single wedding in the last 15 years where I didn’t hear Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. The Cha Cha Slide is a pretty common one, too.
I don’t believe I know anyone that had had an engagement party. It just isn’t a thing.
Also there is a difference between the wedding itself and the reception afterwards which is a party.
For weddings there are some popular choices like The Chicken Dance, Dancing Queen, Daft Punk, Sweet Caroline, anything by Queen, Happy by Pharrell, lots of hip hop, single ladies by Beyoncé, a million country songs, basically anything that is toe tapping and fit for dancing.
For the actual wedding my cousin sang Schubert’s Ave Maria. I cried. She has an unbelievable voice and it was a really cool gift from her to do that.
Hopefully not Hey Ya
I have never heard of a big engagement party. A celebration with, say, a lunch, yes, but not a full-blown party.
For wedding parties, songs can be divided into categories. One is for the dance floor, for which popular rap, dance, pop, and other genre songs are often played, such as:
* “Hey Ya” by Outkast
* “Cha Cha Slide”
* “Crank Dat” by Soulja Boy
* “Cupid Shuffle”
* “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO
* “Low” by Flo Rida
* “Uptown Funk” and “24k Magic” by Bruno Mars
The other category is the first dance song that the couple dances to. Here are some common first dance songs I have often heard:
* “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran
* “I Knew I Loved You” by Savage Garden
* “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston
* “From This Moment On” by Shania Twain
* “Amazed” by Lonestar
* “All My Life” by K-Ci and Jojo
* “Have I Told You Lately” by Van Morrison
* “Right Here Waiting” by Richard Marx
Number one wedding song in my book is The Book of Love by The Magnetic Fields.
Cupid Shuffle, Cotton Eyed Joe
September by Earth Wind and Fire
I’m from New England and I got married in a Boston suburb. I’ll give you one guess as to which Neil Diamond song was on the playlist
I don’t know that it’s typical, but my favorite is “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.
