I had some cheap ones from Walmart that lasted me a couple years, but they don’t sell them anymore. I tried on some other pants there, but kneeling down caused them to slide down my ass, which is not something I want to happen. Not interested in scouring thrift stores since they charge as much as (or more than) normal stores in some cases, plus it’s annoying trying to find something in my size.

Anyway, I want jeans with certain traits, but I’m not sure how to go about finding them. Are there some keywords or good stores I should focus on? What I want is:

1. Tough/rigid material? Not sure how to describe it exactly. I don’t want a ton of elasticity or softness. If I accidentally kneel on a screw, I want the pants to offer some mild protection.
2. Needs crotch room. I don’t want the crotch seam digging into my unmentionables if I’m climbing/crouching/kneeling/just sitting normally.
3. Doesn’t matter to me if people would generally consider it too hot to wear in summer (though it shouldn’t be designed for winter) – being a little warm doesn’t bother me.
4. Shouldn’t be a cat hair magnet.
5. Ideally in a cheaper price range, though I’m open to pricier suggestions if it’s really durable.

  1. Go to your feed or ranch store and get a pair of Dickies, Truwerk, or Carhartts. They’re not jeans persay but they’re durable and comfy.

  2. When I worked construction I used to like getting like the cargo style pants with pockets on the sides like the carhartt style pants, but I’d find cheap version of those at walmart for like $25 usually. I know the jeans you’re talking about because that’s what I buy for fishing and fucking around outside haha they still have jeans like that and they last a good 2 or 3 years, you just gotta find them or ones similar to them. I currently have a pair of them that are about a year old and showing zero signs of damage and I wear the hell out of my jeans. Walmart usually has changing varieties of pants depending on time of year too, so keep an eye out at different walmarts and check pants sections once in a while, sometimes you can find some real gems.

  3. Check out pants with a spandex or elastic of 2-3%. They can really take a beating and move with you.

  4. I’m not in construction, but collision repair. I had been buying Dickies for several years. A $25 would last me about a year before I had them destroyed. Picked up a couple of pairs of Duluth Trading Ballroom Flex Jeans off of ebay. Holy cow. These things are tough and comfortable.

You can order them from Duluth Trading Company to the tune of about $100 a pair, or hop onto eBay and snag them, lightly used for $25 or 30.

Those two pairs I bought are still going strong 18 months later and I’ve grabbed a few more pairs in the process.

  5. Believe it not go on line and order some TDU cargo pants from a surplus store or Amazon. They have double fabric in the crotch and knees they hold up really well. I think you’ll be surprised. You may quit wearing jeans in favor of these.

  6. I try on the cheap jeans in Walmart type stores, and when I find one that fit good I buy a dozen pairs, and get the Chinese tailor to adjust them all to the right length. It’s pretty cheap tailoring when the order is a dozen pairs all set to 100cm.

Repeat after 5 years or so

  7. Carhartt or Dickies. no contest. be sure to try them on before you buy because I discovered I was about two pant sizes larger in Carhartt than Wrangler.

  8. Make the switch to canvas pants. Way more durable. Have minor side pockets for small tools, have double knees and crotches to extend life.
