Facebook advertising local groups or target local area

Tesco always have a board đź‘Ť
Do you have a local friendly pub? My locals all have notice boards and happily have local business flyers up. Local council run leisure centres often have boards too.
I got a lot of custom through pubs and leisure centre notice boards when I started my own business. Good luck in your new venture! 🙂
What’s your business, who’s your target audience, when should people see your adverts, and why do you want the person seeing the advert to come to your business?
All very important questions which affect how you market. (yes, even the last one, and something a lot of our – marketing agency – clients don’t realise is important)

What’s your business? – What do you do, do you have any special niche that makes you better than the competitor, etc. For example, if you’re a gardener, will you also be willing to plant a nice bed of flowers, or will you only maintain what’s there?
Who’s your target audience? – Does physical interaction need to happen? (e.g. a gym, handyman, shop, etc.) If so, you’re probably only going to want to advertise locally. If not you’ll want something that covers the nation. Is your customer base going to be mainly a specific demographic? For example, if you install stair lifts (mainly old people) then posting leaflets in community centres would be better than an advert on Twitter.
Why do you want the person seeing the advert? – When using online advertising, such as Google adwords (the ads at the top of your search results), you can drill down who sees your ads quite a lot. Sometimes you don’t mind “everyone” seeing the ad, but based on the above two questions, you can understand that there’s cases where not everyone needs to see it… and seeing as you pay for every time your ad is seen, that can lead to an increased cost.
When do they see the ads you put out? – If you’re a driving instructor, the best place to put your ad would be on the inside of a bus. Why? Because the only time people will see that ad is when they are on a bus; when the draw of being able to drive is at the highest (because driving will probably be quicker/more comfortable than using the bus). Whereas if you offer a on-demand service (e.g. plumber) then a Google search result ad for a common plumbing question (e.g. “How to fix a leaky tap?”)/”local plumber” is the best time for someone to be seeing your name pop up.
For example, if you sell women’s clothing to people in Nottingham you can tailor your ads to only show to people who’s location data says “Nottingham” and their profile indicates they are “Female”. But you could also say if they live in “Derby” because you offer free shipping within 20 miles. However, if what you’re selling is unique (e.g. you only stock sizes L and above), you may want to target the entire country.

What I’m trying to get at is, think about who you want to target, where, when, and why. And that will lead to better advertising. A lot of our clients were spending thousands of pounds per month (due to not knowing how to advertise themselves correctly) to get a handful of leads. They came to us, we charge them a fraction of the cost, and they get more leads per month.
Employ a freelance ad manager
I used to work for a gardening business. Ads in local papers/magazines only led to calls trying to sell ad space in other publications. Noticeboards and the like didn’t work. The only thing that did was delivering flyers to houses.
