My crush’s (19F) birthday is in two weeks time. I (21M) want to give her a small birthday gift (probably a nice coffee cup). We are currently just normal friends. Do you think it’s a bit too much or too cringe if a normal friend of yours suddenly buys you a birthday gift? Also, personally I think a birthday card may be a bit too much but what do you think?

She once mentioned that she is not a fan of birthday parties or huge celebrations, because she feels weird being the spotlight. If I ask her out for lunch or dinner (just the two of us) using her birthday as an excuse, is it suitable?

  1. I think ask her out for lunch, it’s a good excuse for some time alone and you can be playful about calling it a date etc to see how she reacts.

A coffee cup would be a nice gift but I wouldn’t do both, and I think the lunch has more potential. Take her to her favourite spot and make sure you pay for everything, also pick her up and drop her home, even if it’s walking or using public transport.

    You’re a good guy 🙂

Edit – if the lunch goes well and you guys start to date, get her a coffee cup in a few weeks and tell her you wanted to give it to her for her birthday but didn’t want to overdo it. That would be sweet!
