I’ve been meaning to attend a society’s pub socials for some time and this Friday I’ll have the chance to do it. I don’t have anyone to go with, and it’s the second semester, so I feel like everyone probably already knows each other. I’m quite socially awkward, painfully self conscious, and afraid of dying from embarrassment– it doesn’t help that I’ve heard from an acquaintance that this society, in particular, is really tight knit (as in, outsiders aren’t super welcome). I’m terrified of standing around awkwardly while people stick to those they already know.

What would you do if you were in my situation? I could use all the advice I can get.

  1. Go, seriously. All you need to do is start a conversation. A guy by himself at the bar asked me what beer I was drinking, and when I told him he asked if I had tried one of his favorites. I introduced him to who I was there with, and everyone was talking. Seriously, all you gotta do is start with a question.

Starting the conversation is the hardest, everything is easier from there. Don’t let the fear of something stop you from doing it.
