I am not french but am currently travelling in france and the topic of Verlan came up with friends at dinner. Verlan is a french habit of having some words in their vocabulary that are being existing words but then reversed. Classic example is calling a woman a “mef” comming from the original word of “femme”. As I am not french I asked why you would do that? Someone explained that it historically came from a desire to create a proper language. Then I made the joke that in our language we do that too but that it usually stops at the age of 12. Some people laughed but I think I saw the guy explaining felt offended. Was I being rude?

  1. No you were not rude… it was clearly a joke. Sure some people can be offended, but that doesn’t mean it was bad what you did
