Have you asked? You’d be surprised by what people have.
Pretty sure you’re on some kind of list now!
I imagine it’s because people don’t really like pepper on their fish and chips.
Fish & chip shops may not offer pepper as an option because the traditional way of serving fish & chips does not include seasoning with pepper.
However, it’s always worth asking if pepper is available, as some shops may be happy to provide it upon request.
Listen, there’s salt, vinegar, salt and vinegar or nothing.
Get yourself to Hull mate and have American Chip Spice, top tier.
All of the fish&chip shops I’ve been to in the last 2 years do.
I use huge amounts of pepper, but wouldn’t have it on chips. Worcestershire sauce though… I’d like that as an option in a chippy.
I hate salt on chips. Black pepper and/or tomato sauce or GTFO.
It is a shame as I think vinegar is horrible stuff. Especially the chemical stuff most chippies use. Why would I want my chips to be cold, damp and smell like a sweaty crotch? A nice salt and pepper heat would be much better. My guess is people do a very British “but it is wrong” without actually stating why.
