If people sit there wearing AirPods and playing with their phones would they be annoyed if I start a conversation?

So this guy (honestly don’t know his age but we’re both sophomores so I assume we’re of the same) sits next to me in class, I’d (19F) like to chat with him about his interests and whatnot before class starts, but we usually just sit there both having AirPods on and be silent. I’ve talked to him before and he seems nice and chill it’s just I don’t know if he’d find me weird if I suddenly bring up and wanna talk about something he mentioned a couple of weeks ago (a video game that he plays).
