For me, it has to be the east coast because I love A Tribe Called Quest and Wu-Tang Clan.

  1. Depends on my mood. In a technical sense, West Coast is superior. The rhythms and vibe and musicial talent was better. You could argue it was often more fun and sometimes absolutely comedic.

Easy coast dabbles too much in either overly heavy and bass driven sounds. The balance of which is lost when added to the lyrics. However, the lighter stuff was sometimes more fun. Especially as southern hip hop started to take more share of what was popular.

Easy coast tends to be a little darker. Sometimes you want to feel a little of that emotion.

  2. West is the best but to be honest hip hip been on a steady decline into pop music for a long time. We are in the same place in hip hop as we were with rock in the 80s. Lots of little genres emerging but most of it is commercial garbage that will mostly be forgotten in the future. Drake and stuff like that are absolutely the hair metal of hip hop and its all trash to me.

If we look back historically East easily best in the early era of the Golden age (late 80s to early 90s). West definitely rules the mid to late 90s and into the early 2000s. After that I’d say it’s kind of a toss up there’s even an argument to be made for the south in the mid 2000s but honestly it’s tough since there was a lot of trash and some quality coming out of every region.

  3. I enjoy both, honestly.

But, I’m preferential to East Coast because the greatest rapper to have ever lived is from Harlem. 139 and Lennox Ave, to be specific.

    IYKYK 😏

  4. Spent my formative years in California in the 1990s so I’m going to say west coast.

  5. As a west coaster I am contractually obligated to say west coast. If I were to breach my contract, I get to go meet Tupac.

  6. For my money, it’s West Coast with the exception of Public Enemy who fucking rock.

  7. The music scene in Atlanta for hip hop is legit. Add to this how many movies and TV shows are filmed here and things like Tyler Perry’s studio. It’s becoming an entertainment hub.

  8. Uhh Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis and Houston are far superior. Pretty much the south as a whole. UGK, Outkast, Gucci Mane, Sillk The Shocker, Lil Troy, Pastor Troy, Birdman, Jeezy, Lil Wayne, TI, Ludacris, Lil John, 2 Chainz, 21 Savage, Lil Nas X… some of them far better than East and West coast rappers who haven’t had a hit since 97 and do sketchers commercials now.

  9. I appreciated most hip hop, buy my heart will always belong to the east coast boom-bap variety.

When I think hip hop, that’s what I’m thinking of.

  10. This question isn’t really relevant anymore in 2023.

But in the 90s and early 2000s, East Coast > West Coast

  11. Good rap is good rap, whether they’re from Atlanta, South Central, or Brooklyn. Gun to my head I’d say West Coast, but I have no dog in this fight bc I’m a suburban Midwesterner, I couldn’t really even claim Chicago if I was being honest. But it’s like food; you wouldn’t want the same thing every day. If the producer knows what he’s doing with the beat and the artist can flow with it I’ll have it on repeat.

  12. East coast cus the west coast in terms of hip hop is literally just Cali idk any rappers from the other west coast states
