I’m a single mom of a 5 year old boy who doesn’t see his Dad very often. I would love any suggestions on fun traditions or less obvious activities you did with your Mom or wished your Mom did with you.

  1. My mom took me to my first concert in March 2014. Concert was awesome. One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.

  2. My parents signed me up for soccer when I was a young kid, I liked running around and kicking the ball, but hated the sport.

One memory that really stands out is one practice at the end of the season, we played kids vs parents. Typically parents dropped us off or just waited in their cars, but I still remember guarding/getting guarded by my mom.

  3. Going to see The Offspring and buying a shirt that had “motherfucker” on the back. It’s lyrics from one of their songs I should clarify.

    Edit: I was 12

  4. My mom always had blind faith in me, especially for school tests and assignments. I was always an outstanding student, but I see now that I derived my confidence from her (and my dad’s) belief that I would succeed.

  5. My mom did “summer fun Wednesdays” with me and my sisters. We had a list of places to go and things to do, and every week we picked one (or more) to check off the list together. Miss those days.

  6. My mom pretty much ruined any of the good memories with addiction. So independence at an early age, I guess.

  7. Bake – I always got the last bit of frosting from the container… and the smell and anticipation of a sweet treat was awesome. Everytime I smell cookies, cake, pie baking it takes me back.

  8. I remember at a very young age making a late night trip to see one of the Star Wars movies in the theater.

  9. We got picked up from school one day and my mom told me she saw this great movie while we were at school and couldn’t wait for us to see it so we went after school to see Back to the Future. I think I was 9 at the time.

  10. Picked me up from grade school one day and said we’re going to have an adventure. 40 years later I remember the majority of that day and how we spent as much time as I wanted looking at the museum exhibits, that we had ice cream for lunch, and that we kept it a secret from my siblings.

  11. I used to help my mom clean up after my dad would leave the house in absolute mess. She would get so happy when I would run around picking up stuff from the floor and throwing rubbish in the bins.

  12. I was raised by my father. Mother was in and out for her addiction to opioids addictions… but the most I remember with my mother is making candy, or playing poker for candy. But that’s because my mom hanged around the wrong crowd even when trying to get her life together and there was always suckers that thought they was smarter then the average man even tho they are idiots… all of them sucked at poker in general

  13. Play some sports together (soccer, frisbee, etc. nothing too physically demanding). Also just some simple things like read the Harry Potter books to me and my sibling when we were younger (and they had also recently come out at the time). You don’t have to read the Harry Potter books to your son, at 5 years old, but read some books, maybe more advanced books that may not be up at his level of reading yet but you think he would be interested in (bonus points if you can make up different voices for the characters).

And later on, when I was a teenager, we went to some concerts together.

  14. I don’t know. My mom didn’t really do stuff with us. Trips to carnivals, camping, museums, plays, etc were usually handled by my dad. My mom usually just stayed home.

She did once buy me a discounted book on archeology because I said I use to want to be an archeologist when I was a kid.

  15. Boys love food, take him to places that serve the food he likes and use it as a mother son bonding time. My mom and I still go to our favorite restaurants to eat a meal together and I don’t care how much that makes me look like a momma’s boy😁

  16. Since dad is not around a lot, try having both of you learning fishing. It can be very relaxing with a lot of excitement thrown in

  17. I have an amazing mom! She was my bestfriend when I was little kid and I adore her to this day. I always enjoyed helping her in the kitchen, car rides, taking naps on the couch, going to the park.

  18. I remember once when she was on weight watchers I handed her a bit of food at dinner(don’t remember what exactly) and told her “Here Mom…gain weight!”
