I am a Canadian who wants to visit New York. I’ll be crossing the border by car with my wife and daughter. My wife and I have valid passports. What paperwork or identification is required for my 8 year old daughter? Thanks in advance.

  1. I would suggest checking the US embassy in Ottawa’s website, or the Canadian foreign affairs website. I don’t think many Americans know entry requirements for non-citizens.

  2. American’s aren’t going to be the experts on what is required for foreign nationals to enter the US. I would assume that Canada has some kind of age at which passports are required for minors. You should just Google it or consult some government resource.

  3. Canadian citizens aged 15 years and under entering the United States by land or water require one of the following documents:

    a passport

an original or a copy of a birth certificate

    an original Canadian citizenship certificate

  4. We’re not really the best sub for these kinds of questions because we’re not experiencing entering the US as non-Americans but I found:

    > United States and Canadian citizen children under age 16 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where he or she was born), a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card.

  5. This is not an “ask an American” question, this is a “visit the state department website” question.

  6. Be careful, I went there for about 15 minutes with my mom to drop off a package and someone next to our car shot something/someone.
