When I was a kid my dad taught me that if I had finished reading a newspaper while on the train or bus, it’s best to leave it on a seat so someone else can pick it up and read.

It’s only occurred to me like 20 years later that it could’ve just been an excuse to litter and I’ve fallen for it all my life. So yeah, is this actually a thing or have I been unknowingly littering?

  1. I think it’s fine.

People who don’t want to read them will just move them.

On most services a cleaner will bin them anyway.

I only really see an issue with it on London services including the Tube, where so many people leave the free Metro/Standard around. But even then they don’t really cause problems.

  2. When I used to use public transport I liked picking up a newspaper to read from a seat. I’m not sure how many people would appreciate that nowadays with everything available online. I don’t see it as litter though.

  3. Yeah, it’s fine. Some people will actually read them, and, especially on the tube, they’re easy enough to move out of the way to that shelf bit behind the seats.

  4. If I’ve paid 2 quid for a paper, I want it to get as much use as possible. If I get on the train and a paper’s there I’ll read it if I’ve got nothing to hand.

Better to have a paper you don’t need than be sat if travelling alone on the train with no book or phone staring out the window.

  5. I don’t do it so much on trains, but I’ll leave my newspaper on a tube seat once I’m done.
