So I’m looking at ordering some fabric from Ireland to be shipped to England, so it won’t be going through Northern Ireland – is anyone able to confirm/explain whether I will be paying UK VAT or any excise duty, etc? Everything I can find online is super confusing, and I think seems to be geared towards companies rather than individuals. For reference it is fabric totalling just over €50.

Obviously you will.
If you buy from outside of the UK you pay..
This week I imported £500 worth of Fabric from NL. I paid £150 in VAT and Import Duty. Not sure if it scales percentage wise, but it would suggest you will pay around £15-20
It’s because governments are greedy and love stealing money from people they are supposed to look out for.
There are exemptions for low-value imports. If I remember correctly – please check on GOV.UK – if it’s less than £135 you don’t pay import duty but you may have to pay VAT. Anecdotally, a lot of low-value packages are just being waved through.
