I’ve been reading the news lately and saw that
US Senate majority whip Richard Durbin and US senator Jeanne Shaheen, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, introduced legislation recommending Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver program.

Dereck Hogan, an official of the US State Department, said on Tuesday that The United States firmly supports Romania’s entry into the Visa Waiver program.

Do you think there’s any chance of Romania being included by the end of 2023 in light of Russian aggression happening so close to US Army bases in Romania ?

  1. Seems it’s a bipartisan bill on a fairly non controversial issue. It probably has a good chance of passing.

What’s the relevance of the proximity of Russian aggression in the last paragraph of your question? So you think this makes it more or less likely to pass?

  2. No idea, but I think it’s pretty sad for the EU if we did that before they let Romania into Schengen. But maybe if we did, it would help that process. Sorry you guys got screwed by Austria.

  3. If Romania’s visa overstay rate in the US has fallen to a significantly negligible level, they will be included in the visa waiver program.

  4. Romania is in NATO, so I don’t think there’s too much connection between the response to Russian agression and inclusion in the VWP.

I do think it’s long-overdue that Romania ve included in the VWP though. I hope it goes through.

And it’s about time the EU gets its shit together and admits Romania to the Schengen area, while we’re at it.

  5. It appears to be a bipartisan bill without serious opposition. I suspect it will pass.

  6. It has some key backers that can help it get out of committee in the Senate, but it’s not likely to be a priority.

If it can get to a foot vote in both the House and the Senate than I would rate it’s chances positively, but getting to those votes is the hard part. They may have to tie it into another bill.
