One of my American buddies says In-N-Out Burgers is the best fast food for its price range. Ive never tried their food because it’s seemingly only popular in America.

How would you rate the In-N-Out food compared to Mcdonalds, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell, and Jack In The Box (if you have that one)?

You are free to add any other fast food places if you deem necessarily, but I will most likely not know them, just like you will not know what an Oporto is.

  1. The best thing about in and out is how consistent they are. Your burger will always be the same. The fries absolutely suck but the burgers are the best fast food burger around.

  2. We have Dick’s in the PNW, which is in the same style of fast food, and is good enough such that nobody even jokes about it’s name.

I was, frankly, unimpressed with In-N-Out.

  3. Given the choice in the price range I’d have to say Culvers double cheeseburger is a better burger. McDonald’s burgers are very salty, and Burger King used to be pretty good when they were cooked fresh. 30 years ago Jack in the Box cheeseburgers were very good, but corporate greed has reduced them to a shadow of their former self. Taco Bell is filling food when you are hungry late night and not nearly as greasy as most fast food. KFC has fallen the most; people who eat there in Japan say the difference is night and day. I suspect what they get in Japan is what we used to get here in the 70’s, it was almost as good as what grandma on the farm could cook

  4. Burger itself is about the best you can get for the price. Shakes are decent, fries are hot garbage, and they don’t really sell anything else.

  5. There’s a regional fast food chain where I live called Whataburger that is, in my opinion, far superior to In-n-Out. However In-N-Out is much better than McDonald’s, BK, and Jack in the Box. I wouldn’t really compare it to KFC and Taco Bell because those places don’t really do burgers. I really like Taco Bell though lol.

Also incidentally there is a restaurant in my city called Oporto but it’s fine dining and very expensive, not fast food lol.

  6. “For its price range” is the key bit there. The burger itself is fine – nothing to write home about – but cheap. So the value is certainly there, and that’s the strong point. The fries kinda suck, to be honest.

I’ve been to In-N-Out a few times when I’ve had business trips on the west coast. I don’t feel like I’m missing anything not having them around on the east coast. Personally, I’d rather just go to Culver’s or something.

  7. I am a native Californian and In-n-out beats all of the fast food places mentioned above. Blake’s Lotaburger in New Mexico is better than In-n-out in my opinion and is probably the best burgers in america.

  8. Gordon Ramsey and Anthony Bourdain thought it was the best fast food. I’m not gonna pretend like I know food better than them

  9. I’m an oddity in preferring Burger King to most other fast food burgers. In-N-Out are … fine. Better than McDonalds, maybe comparable to Jack in the Box. If you’re ever in a place with a Braum’s, stop for a burger *and* ice cream.

  10. It’s not that good. Either Californians are delusional, have bad food, or nostalgia kicked in hard

  11. It has locations in only a handful of states, majority of Americans have no idea about this place.

  12. I was born/raised in CA for 25yrs before I left in 2014. I do miss In-n-Out, fresh food, great burgers and the fries are banging with just a little salt added. Having said that, I’d pass it up for a fucking Jack in the Box real quick. Haven’t had JitB in almost 10 years and I miss that greasy goodness at 3am on the way home from the bar. Their tacos were t even really tacos, but they just did something right for me. And don’t forget the egg rolls!

  13. The fries are the worst fry available in any restaurant. They need to stop using Kennebec potatoes and start using a better frying variety.

  14. I ate there as strongly recommended by a friend. It was just uh, fast food, pretty typical fare really.

  15. In-N-Out will be better than those you listed. The others that you listed are the bottom end of fast food.

I’m not a huge fan of In-N-Out. It’s okay. It’s probably a step above Whataburger, but below Five Guys and Shake Shack IMO. Five Guys is international. I’ve eaten at ones in Cologne and Dubai.

  16. They’re not nationwide even in America. I’m in North Carolina and the closest In-N-Out is approximately a 15 hour drive. Never tried them, and don’t feel like I’m missing anything thereby.

  17. I prefer McDonalds fries. When I get fries from In-n-Out, I’ve started asking for them to cook them a little less, which I think improves the taste and texture of them.

In-n-Out’s burgers are fine, and a decent price, but I like the char-broiled flavor on Burger King’s or Carl’s Jr’s burgers better (to be fair, most of Burger King’s and Carl’s Jr’s burgers are much more expensive than In-n-Out’s). KFC and Taco Bell are completely different type of food to In-n-Out, so I’d never compare them. At Jack in the Box I never get burgers because I prefer my burgers from other fast food places, but I do like some of the things they do (that are unique to them).

If I don’t care about the line, I’m more likely to get a couple cheap, filling, good quality, burgers from In-n-Out, then get a more expensive, but more flavorful burger from Burger King or Carl’s Jr. For burgers, I’ll always choose In-n-Out over Jack in the Box or McDonalds. The line is the killer though. If I get in their drive through, I can be there for 20 minutes (at 8:45 pm), whereas if I stop somewhere else after work, I’ve got my food and I’m home before I have a chance to order at In-n-Out.

  18. In n out is definitely better than those nationwide/international chains. It’s more of a regional chain so idk if it really competes with those. It does have competition from places that are more quality oriented fast casual. Think chic fil a or Ono Hawaiian

  19. In N Out food is absolutely nothing special. Totally average. I was so disappointed when I tried it!

  20. Everybody hates on In-N-Out fries. I actually like them. They only use three ingredients: potato, oil, and salt. I prefer the natural taste of potatoes instead of a giant list of 20 artificial ingredients used at other fast food places. Sadly, that is the taste that Americans have gotten accustomed to. No wonder this country is so unhealthy.

  21. In N Out for me is mediocre at best. Burgers are OK, fries are gross unless you get them double fried (which most places are happy to do if you ask), and the shakes are good. That said, they treat their employees really well, and pay them well. They also aren’t a place that breaks the bank every time you go, so for that, I applaud them.

For the food, I give them a 3/10. For the other stuff, I give them 10/10.

Side note, my favorite fast food place is Wendy’s. They have some truly fantastic burgers. My go to is the bourbon bacon burger, then I add avocado to it. My least favorite is Taco Bell, purely for the reason that I have to spend what seems like hours on the toilet after I eat there. Sucks because that’s my husband’s favorite

  22. Californian here. In N Out is fine, the burgers are really good, and I’m sure you are picking up that the fries aren’t that good. It’s better than other fast food burgers for the most part, but there’s a nostalgia to it that a lot of people enter into the calculations that flaws it a bit.

Best bang for your buck against Taco Bell is hard. Again, I live in San Diego where we have real mexican food, but I still like taco bell. I don’t eat it down here, I don’t think we have very many taco bells because of the local mexican scene. Quality wise Taco Bell is meh, but fast food wise I think Taco Bell is genius. It’s not mexican at all, but they are like “hey, doritos are basically hard shell taco shells… let’s do it”. And I’m okay with that.
