For sports, play video games. Any of the officially licensed games like NBA2K will help you learn the rules and the players as well as strategy.

Look at a region map and pick one to stick with, and move on when you feel like it. Our regional culture is more rich than national culture, and immensely interesting. But if you would rather focus on the US as a whole, JJ Mccullough is an excellent Youtube channel for cultural analysis of Americans. Do check him out
As far as pop culture goes vh1 did some pretty good specials called “I love the 70s/80s/90s”
CNN also did some specials on the decades starting with the 60s I think.
