Going Partying/Clubbing for the first time, what do I do there?

1. when i go, i like to dance to the music.

   if i’m lucky, i get to dance with others.

   i too don’t drink alcohol, but i’ll get something nonalcoholic. a good simple non-boozy drink is OJ, pineapple juice, ginger ale or beer, and a touch of grenadine. looks fancy without being fancy.

   i do recommend you bring earplugs if it’s your first time. this is a loud environment and you only get one set of ears.

   also, bring cash to pay for drinks rather than card. pay as you go and tip the bartenders. it’s not easy work and they are helping everyone there have fun.

2. Just go with the flow, get a drink! I’ve spent a lot of time at bars just talking with my friends about anything. The conversation just flows when everyone drinks. Don’t go in with expectations, good or bad, and have a great time. Dance if you want! Worse case scenario it is boring and you can just leave.

   That being said, always be careful with you and your friends drinks. There are some creeps out there that can spike a drink quickly and discreetly and you won’t know it until the ride home or worse. As a 25F I’ve seen it firsthand. So try to have fun but also, girl code.

3. Dancing is what people usually do at the club with intermittent shouting at each other. (This is what passes for conversation due to the LOUD music.). There’s also a good bit of time queuing up-at the bar, the bathroom…ALWAYS head to the toilet as soon as you’re inclined. There’s going to be a wait. Sometimes the bar is so crowded just go ahead and order a drink for each hand. Be prepared to stand your ground because there’s rarely an actual line to get in. ALWAYS keep your drinks in your hands or under your nose and put your hand over it when talking to strangers. NEVER go anywhere without a friend and everyone who started the evening together should end the evening together.

   And for your friends that drink, liquor instead of beer usually means less bathroom breaks, but it also hits harder quicker. Get your swerve on before your dropping a bundle for each one (the best way of avoiding the bar queue more than once) and end the evening with LOTS of water.

4. Wee woo wee woo, safety police here! I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but here’s some club safety tips: When I’m at the club, I tend to watch drinks and personal belongings, since I don’t dance. Bring only what you need, and never leave a drink unattended. Make sure you guys get water, too. If you feel like you’re in danger for whatever reason, the bartenders will help you. There are many ways to ask discreetly. They might vary locally, so if it’s something you’re worried about, just ask for future reference. You should also wear protective footwear — if you’re going in, say, massive platform heels, make sure to drive in slippers/crocs/etc. and change when you get to the venue, as those kinds of shoes can make driving unsafe! If anyone you know is going to drink, DO NOT let them drive under any circumstances, and if they do, definitely don’t get in their car. Most importantly, make sure to keep each other updated on where you are and where you’re going, just in case.

   Cool? Cool! Now that that’s over…

   Dancing is the club’s main feature. It’s also a great place to talk to strangers! People go all out on club nights and there’s plenty of cool outfits to compliment. Personally, I like to sit near a speaker and watch the lights while I feel the music. The smoking area is nice for taking a break and talking, if your club has one of those. In general, it’s a nice place to cut loose and dress up all fancy. You should invest in glitter. I ALWAYS wear glitter. 🕺
