I hate the fact that I have to be led into a conversation. I don’t know how to actually start a conversation but if one is presented to me I can hold my own. I feel awkward sometimes because I want to communicate with others and I try hard to. I just never know what to talk about. I feel like I’m boring or something. What do I do?

  1. okay, i am struggling with the same thing. when i feel i can manage, i just say off-the-wall shit i’m pondering. like, “do you like horses?” and go from there. we dont have to keep on about horses; depending on the answer, i might ask about horseback riding, then maybe other fun sports or experiences they’ve had or want to have. or that you want to have.

a good thing can be looking up a list of open-ended questions to start off with. memorize a few and keep them as conversation starters. practice usually helps a lot, and with time you’ll have your own conversation starters you like to ask.

in carrying a conversation, pay attention to the information they volunteer, and give a little of yourself back. it’s hard and I am still trying to consistently do it but it is worth doing.

  2. You need to learn more about the art of small talk – those really lame initial comments about the weather or ‘did you see the game last night’ have a lot of value in social interactions.

You can also look up “conversation starters” – I just googled it and there are lists of 10, 50, 100+ questions you can ask people to start a conversation.

Look up these lists find one or two questions you think are good and practice them. See what happens.
