29 y/o, long term girlfriend, stable enjoyable work. I’m pretty happy in life but could use more hobbies or things to really get involved with after work.

We already hike, bike, gym, kayak in the summer. I play video games occasionally. We cook new meals. We’ve explored our cities cultural places a lot. I tinker with my home server.

What are some hobbies you guys do and or could recommend to an average joe like me?

  1. Books/reading is always good. Although, to be honest, sounds like you’ve got a lot of hobbies already. Far more than I have (running and reading).

  2. I recommend having some kind of shop where you build things. I have my garage set up as a forge.

  3. i HIGHLY recommend 3d printing. Start with a basic printer, learn as you go. You can make useful things or you can make completely pointless toys and trinkets. It’s not a prohibitive cost of entry and you can spend a TON of hours on it

  4. Find some sort of volunteer work that suits you. Stock shelves in a food bank, tutor English at an ESL program. Mow an old geezer’s lawn. Coach/Ref a sportsball that’s popular near you. Get involved with your local big brothers/big sisters program.

Ideally, shoot for volunteer work that’s easy to pick up and put down without disrupting your life or the organization’s.

It’ll improve someone else’s quality of life and it makes a great conversation piece in job interviews.

  5. A Toyota Land Cruiser 60-series would like to discuss your disposable income with you.

  6. Find some kind of work that brings spiritual meaning to your life. Volunteer, mentorship, habitat for humanity, youth coaching, church service, working at a soup kitchen, volunteer EMT, answer people’s questions on Reddit, etc.

  7. I enjoy doing stuff that I can find a semi-competitive group around.

    In my 30s, I’ve…

    – Gone from just going to the gym to now competitive powerlifting with USPA

    – Shooting at the range to now shooting in USPSA competitions

Each of those groups has super friendly and welcoming people. They are productive hobbies (by my definition). The competition is serious enough that you want to try your hardest and improve but not to the point where it brings out mean spirits in people.

  8. I don’t know if you like drinking, but mixology and bartending are very nice complements to cooking. These skills can liven up a party quite well, and are actually not that expensive, depending on the drinks you choose to mix.

  9. Disc golf is really fun. Cheap and easy to get into, casual friendly, can be competitive the better you get and courses are free / at almost every public park & they’ll bring you through the park to places you might not have normally checked out.

  10. Wrenching, fixing things, welding, 3D printing, engineering, design, sketching, traveling

Wouldn’t mind getting back into Motorcycling myself. Gave it up as the kids showed up, but do miss it to some extent, and an old bike would be a fun hobby…then I could combine wrenching, fixing things, welding, 3D printing, engineering, design, sketching, and traveling into one massive hobby….could even expand it out a bit for other items I do…but those are things I kinda love….Now I just need to clean out my garage a little bit so I have more space for all of the above. 😉

  11. Have you considered alcoholism? It’ll spice up your love life AND free you from the pain of “hike , bike, gym.”

  12. Playing instruments is fulfilling, can be built on over a lifetime, can be taken almost anywhere. Once you get good, buy some nice instruments, the sound you can create is incredible. It’s also kind of hypnotizing, when I’m playing my mind is just floating, it feels really good.

It’s not as hard as most people think, but you do have to be willing to suck in the beginning and experiment to figure it out. In that sense it’s mostly your psychology that gets in the way.

I started with guitar, did that for about 10 years, picked up banjo and I love it, even though I didn’t even listen to bluegrass or anything when I started. Playing instruments is a journey.

  13. Electric Unicycles are pretty awesome. A good middle ground between biking and driving
