So I (22) live in the arse end of nowhere in South Wales and there isn’t much career opportunity/nightlife/shops/things to do in general so I’ve been debating moving towards Manchester/Liverpool way.

What are the pros and cons a 22 year old might find living in a city?

I should add I’m a contractor so I work in Taunton M-F but I don’t really fancy moving that way

  2. Pros: You’re in a city and have all the things that come with being in a city

Cons: You’re in a city and have all the things that come with being in a city

  3. Pretty much listed them lol

pros: opportunities + things to do

    cons: expensive and busy

  4. I lived in Manchester in my 20s… Loved it! There’s a lot of opportunity, career wise and socially and you’ll make great friends in no time. So much to do, and see, on your doorstep and only a quick train journey away from other great places too! I would highly recommend.

  5. Pros: more job opportunities and social activities

Cons: high population density and lots of concentrated poverty.

An alternative that many people do is to live in a village and commute occasionally into a city. This is more possible these days due to WFH.

  6. Something not mentioned that I love about cities, IDK about Manchester specifically, is the anonymity. In small towns everyone knows you, your truck, where you drink, go to church, who your friends are, etc. Much less so, IMO, in the city where most of the people you see on the daily don’t know who you are.

  7. Lots to do, to see, to eat, etc. Great age to meet people. Good opportunities for jobs.

Downside is it’ll be more expensive, higher crime rates (but vast majority have zero issues) and if you’re not used to the hustle bustle of a city you might find it a bit exhausting (at first anyway).

  8. There were plenty of pros for me when I lived in the city. I could walk to work, save money on the commute. All shops and train stations were in walking distance, and you can get to pretty anywhere from Manchester and Liverpool. Not needing a taxi after a night out is good too. Another nice one is wandering around the city on Sunday morning. I’d get the papers, feed the ducks, get breakfast from a cafe, had a stroll around while it’s quiet.

You never have a problem getting anything delivered. No shortage of takeaways, either. I think I had the choice of about 200 that would deliver to me.

Cons, Manchester city centre is expensive for rent, and you don’t get a lot for your money. Liverpool is more reasonable and, with no offence to my home city, I think Liverpool is a more pleasant city.

Alternatively, Warrington is affordable and you’ve got both Manchester and Liverpool just 20 minutes away by train.

  9. Pros: Get to meet new people all the time, tons of pubs/clubs/restaurants, easy to find jobs which means its easier to quit a job you hate, Tinder is way better if you’re into that, you can generally dress/act differently without being judged or gossiped about. Crazy shit happening on a daily basis so you rarely get bored.

Cons: Tons of noise, smells like soot and piss, crackheads and homeless people everywhere, high-rents for shitty properties, tons of hipster/roadman/crusty/student/yuppie dickheads, the sense of alienation that creeps in from time to time

  10. Bristol would be a better option for commuting to
    Taunton surely?

Great place to live as well.
