Hi everyone. I have been friends with Joe for 11 years. He is a gay man and we have had a very strong friendship for many years. When me and my partner were moving back to my hometown, we asked if he wanted to be our roommate to offset some of the rent and utility costs. It went well for a few months, but from the very beginning me and my partner have done all the cleaning and upkeep other than his room. For a while, I just kept my mouth shut and didn’t bother to say anything. Until one day he left big pieces of food under the table and I asked if he would clean them up. The next day, he sent me a long text saying that I make him uncomfortable in his own home and I have unfair standards. Since that time I have asked simple things such as bringing out the trash when he takes the bag out of the bin, or cleaning up his beard hair in the bathroom, and it’s always met with a snappy and tense response. I guess I’m wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and if anyone has any strategies that may make this easier. Thanks in advance.
