So I (15F) have an online best friend (16F). I have never had a friend online or in real life for as long as I have been friends with her (about 6 months) So I don’t really know normal friend behavior. We’ll call my friend Jess. So Jess doesn’t have great parents and she has had fake friends in the past and I think she feels like I’m the only one that really cares about her, she is always telling me how much she loves me, appreciates me, and how she can’t live without me, And I think I am probably the only one who supported her (she’s trans). I love her as well and love talking to her but I don’t say it often, as much as I think it’s sweet how much she cares about me, I feel like at this point she says it too often and I don’t know if regular best friends do that. Also recently she said to me “I would overdose if I had to go to your funeral” and I told her please not to do that and she replied “you know I can’t live without you”. I don’t know if I just don’t care about as much but I wouldn’t overdose for her and I could live without her, I don’t know if I just don’t care for her as much or if she overcares.

Sorry if this post was all over the place, I don’t usually write posts on reddit.

TLDR, I think my best friend overcares about me and I don’t know if I should stop talking to her.

  1. If it bothers you, you should bring it up to her. Telling someone you’d “overdose for them” is manipulative. If you don’t feel comfortable expressing this to her, you probably don’t feel comfortable in the friendship. A poor reaction from your friend after you bring this up would signal to me that you should distance yourself from her.

I’ve had several friends like this and it can be incredibly draining. Stay safe (especially in an online friendship!) and do what feels right.
