I’m thinking of buying my first car and I’d be pleased to hear some advice from you. Thanks.

  1. Lexus/Toyota. Every car I’ve ever owned in 15 years of driving has been a Lexus, with the exception of one of my weekend cars, which is a Toyota. I have literally never had anything go wrong with any of them beyond a blown tyre. The aftercare/customer service is also second to none.

Edit: and I have driven every single one of them with zero respect whatsoever.

  2. I have 100,000 miles on my Toyota and it’s never been in the shop except for oil changes and tires. Before that I had a Honda and VW. The VW was the worst. The Honda was OK.

  3. Toyota. My current Toyota runs flawlessly after 330K miles. I’ve had one timing belt and one coil replaced in all that time. Other than that, nothing but tires and oil changes.

  4. Toyota and Honda have traditionally been great, but have slipped a bit recently. I’m shocked to be saying it, but Kia and Hyundai are both making really great cars these days, even though they used to be punchlines. I’ve only ever owned Ford’s, and they’ve always been great for me, but not everyone reports the same.

  5. Honda and Toyota

I’m partial to Honda because I myself own a Civic Si and am looking at getting a Type R

If you want a reliable truck, Toyota

If you want a reliable car, Honda

    That’s my rule of thumb.

DO NOT TRUST NISSAN, They used to be uber reliable but lately they’ve had shit loads of issues with CVT transmissions (but that seems to be common with most CVTs but especially Nissans)

Edit: Mazda as well, Beautiful cars especially their Miata and RX7 super fun to work on. I havent driven their new vehicles so I can’t speak on those.

  6. Toyota and Honda. I have a 2000 accord that I just forgot to get the oil changed in recently. 10k miles later I remembered and my mechanic said no oil came out. Runs perfectly still.

  7. My previous car was my first and a Toyota. Was 15 years old when I traded it in and ran fine. Every mechanic was pleasantly surprised whenever it went through an MOT as it looked like shit on the outside (corroded paint etc) but always got me from a to b

  8. Older Nissan were good, but Toyota and Honda are also. I’ve heard the Corollas have issues, though.

  9. I’ve never driven anything other than brands under the GM banner. This isn’t because I would theoretically have a problem with driving a vehicle of a different make, it’s just that I’m pretty young, and to this point the most easily available vehicles for me have been GMs. That said, I haven’t had any problems beyond what one would expect, and I’ve driven some of em pretty far, both in single trips and over their lifespans. Never had one shit the bed on me yet

  10. I had really good luck with Mazda. I drove it for 12 years 150,000 miles never had to do a single thing to it other than fluid changes, tires, batteries, and 1 brake job. They are reasonably priced also so good for a first car.

Check out Consumer Reports rankings. They are very helpful with telling you which brands are most reliable.

  11. I’ve had my 2010 Pontiac Vibe GT for twelve years, 190000 miles, almost no problems. It’s basically a Toyota Matrix and I love it.

  12. Subaru. I had a 98 Subaru legacy that came from New York so the entire underside was rusted because of the road salts.

Most dependable car I’ve ever had. I had several major repairs. Replaced the entire hard brake line, replaced a cv joint that broke WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR. And still drove it to the shop on both occasions with no incident.

I had this thing for years, basically all though my late teens early 20s, nearly a decade. Mind you it wasn’t new when i got it. And the car was literally falling apart around the engine by the time I sold it.

  13. Japanese manufacturers, so Mazda sedans have pretty soft clutches so I recommend not wearing steel caps when driving them lol

  14. The Hondas I’ve owned have required the least amount of maintenance of any car.

  15. Toyota, Honda or Mazda. I recommend all three to anyone who asks and have had absolutely sterling service from the second two. We have a pre-Renault Nissan in the family as well that’s now 13 years and 300 000 km old and hasn’t skipped a beat, but I wouldn’t want a newer one. My wife made an excursion into Renault ownership and still rues the day. Sold it (at a huge loss) after multiple breakdowns and seeing the jaw-dropping bills the full warranty and maintenance plans were carrying.

  16. I’ve heard Toyotas and Hondas last for ages. Plus since they’re some of the most common cars, you can literally take them anywhere to get fixed and they are supposed to be a little less expensive to do so.

And as a side note, if you’re looking for the SAFEST car, Volvo is pretty much your best pick.

  17. Toyota for sure. I have a 2005 Camry still going after almost 300k miles. It is a tank!
