Definitely losing interest yearly.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max 256gb and don’t plan on buying a new phone for another five years. Prior to my current phone, I had an iPhone 7 128gb that I kept until it finally gave in a year ago.

My philosophy on buying necessary tech is: get the highest spec model and use it for as long as possible.

My Kindle Paperwhite is already seven years old and still running like new. No plan on upgrading.

  1. Not since I was about 23/24. As long as whatever device it is enables me to do the things I need to do I don’t really care if it’s the ‘latest thing’ or not. More often than not it’s just a waste of money.

  2. I’ve never been interested.

My Lenovo P2 phone is still going strong after 5 years.

  3. Never was. When I make a big purchase I’ll research for weeks, and then I’ll get the one that is the best value for money long term.

I do however splash out where justified. Big believer of spending the most you can at the time to make it last the longest (eg. Gaming PC).

Good philosophy. But even that’s too much for me. I look at it as “what are my requirements” and find the best balance of price and features that meets those requirements. But first I try to explore if there’s a way to do it cheaper or free, or “do I really need it now”. I’m a tightarse basically.

And then once I have the thing I use it until it becomes unusable.

  5. I’ve got a pretty bad tech habit, but my current setups are quality and will last me for quite some time. I don’t upgrade/replace nearly as much as I used to, but I still explore new areas of tech to satisfy my curiosity.

  6. I’m in your camp. Buying the bleeding edge tech has always been a fools game. Although I still do love my gadgets. I love my ReMarkable for taking notes at work. My kindle (I did recently upgrade to the latest paperwhite due to the wireless charging stand, love it). I play VR games on my wireless Vive Pro with index controllers. I just wait until things go sale.

Same goes for video games, just wait six months and buy it on a Steam sale.

  7. Remember the Samsung Lotus? Thays the last time I really cared. I take whatever free or heavily discounted phone is offered and use it until I break the screen, then I get a new one.

  8. I agree with that. I tried that with my iPhone X and it died in 2 years. The internal microphone broke. It was sudden so went with the cheaper iPhone 12. Now I’m waiting for the 15 before I upgrade again. I’ve been upgrading everything else though, MacBook Pro 16 inch, AirPods Pro 2. I don’t plan on getting any new ones for the next 5 years or more hopefully.

  9. Depends on the technology. For phones I am an iPhone user but I buy the SE models and keep them for years. I have an SE2 right now that I got about 3 years ago and I would like to keep it for at least another 2 as it currently does everything I want. I am a mac user for computers and keep my computers for a long time, my current rig is 5+ years old and is still going very strong. When its new computer time, I will certainly look for something new, but its not new computer time. My digital cameras are also a few years old now but are still fantastic.

The new tech I am really looking forward to trying are Driverless Taxis and I will take a ride in one as soon as I can. I am looking forward to the precision fermentation produced foods that we will see come online over the next few years.

Phones to me are really just not something where the annual upgrade is something to get excited over. The coolest new thing I think that iPhones do that I think is really cool is Apple Pay, which they have been doing for several years now.

  10. Even when I was younger, my philo was just to buy what was needed when it was needed. Thus, I have never touched brand new Apple products because for what they can do, these were usually over-priced. I do like the longevity of Apple machines though. I have a 2012 macbook pro still running fine. But Apple has discontinued driver support for legacy systems so I can’t even upgrade this beyond Catalina.

Will I be replacing my MacBook Pro soon? Yes. But not with a brand new one. There are several like new used Lenovo X1 Carbon or T60s ultrabooks that are quite affordable that need to be rescued and put to use.

This also goes for games. I’m in my 50s and still play games. I have a PC and a PS4. I don’t buy games brand new. I wait for at least 6 mos and a sale. There’s also lot of used like new PS4 title on the marketplace.

My PC, I build myself. And I try to get good trustworthy components. And only when needed.

In short, do I care about latest tech? Not really.
