We are both in a relationship for the first time. But I felt cut off from his life. He always had his life in order, but I rarely seemed to be in it. He would play games and read in his free time, but rarely talked and interacted with me. Was I paying too much attention to him? Or does he actually not like me much?

It’s almost impossible to say for sure. It is quite possible that he just has such a temperament. But most likely he’s just not interested in you enough much. I would advise you to find another person. You have no idea how happy you can be with a person who completely understands you. Just keep looking. You will find it, I definitely believe.
He’s inexperienced and given his hobbies, he might be a bit of an introvert.
Engage him, ask him about his books and games, what he likes about them. Tell him you’d like to know more about it him because he’s an interesting person (if you truely believe he is).
At the same time, show him your own hobbies and passions.
