I would stay away from this friend for a bit. Make yourself unavailable someway/somehow. And don’t feel the need to get back to him quickly. Do this for a few weeks and he will get the message. If he doesn’t get it, slowly stop spending any time around him.
I say this as I think you might have a hard time speaking up for yourself and this should do the job.

Maybe it has become his habit.
Right now you are just assuming what the reason might be which will lead to unnecessary overthinking.
Why not just face him and ask him directly? (in the same laughing manner)
Btw, this question shouldn’t come out of self-doubt. It should come out of curiosity to improve yourself if required.
