That’s a poor title, but I basically have trouble with expressing myself when others share positive news. For example, a colleague says they’re excited about starting a new project. Internally, I’m happy for them, but I think my congratulation message comes across as indifferent. Or another example is when a friend says they’ve made it exclusive with someone. I want to show excitement, but I probably sound fake when I say something like “I’m so happy for you”. I don’t mind saying what I feel, but if I don’t smile and act like a cheerleader, I might come across as apathetic and rude. On the other hand, I feel like I’m performing when I try to turn up my energy. I often self-reflect afterwards and spiral. I don’t know how to be bubbly even though I want to rejoice in the good news. Do you have any advice or tips?

  1. You don’t have to be bubbly and high energy. A genuine smile and a tilt of the head showing engagement sounds more your style. Practice in the mirror.

  2. If it’s more genuine, you can also say “congratulations I hate you” or “about time, my man!” Sometimes a little snark makes it more personal and real than just giving them the generic polite hallmark card response. Cheeky grin optional.
