In my job, I’ve been asked by the owner of the company to do 1-on-1’s with employees about career goals but he wants it to be a casual conversation on a more personal level and I’m fairly new in my position, so this will also be an opportunity to build a bit of a rapport with the employees. I feel like I have terrible social skills when it comes to small talk. I did get Propranolol that helped immensely with public speaking, but I don’t know how it does in this situation. I think it’ll help keep me from being nervous, but won’t help with the conversation. Anyone have any tips for making small talk when I’m the one that needs to carry the conversation?

  1. Have a list of open ended questions. Give some relevant feedback between their answer and the next question.

The only way to conquer nerves is to allow them to surface and keep doing the thing over and over until you are confident. It’s normal to be nervous doing new things. Build courage not prescriptions.
