fake (?) love confessions

sorry if this is not the best sub to post this in. anyway, i keep recieving love confessions in school that follow something along the lines of “my friend has a crush on you.” i never even know the people that tell me this. are they just trying to make fun of me? is it a joke or are they being serious?? it always seemed like an odd way to embarrass me i dont really get it
