what would you ask a Taiwanese who’s been living in the States for several years?

  1. What would say is most distinctive about Taiwan’s culture as opposed to the PRC? What assumptions about Americans have you found to be correct and incorrect? What’s been the strangest assumption about you/Taiwan/Taiwanese people that you’ve encountered?

  2. I don’t generally go around asking strangers questions unless I need directions somewhere. But if we were at a party or otherwise introduced I might ask the usual, such as about occupation, hobbies, or where you live.

  3. Would you make me your favorite dish from home and what was the biggest misconception you had about coming here?

  4. How westernized is Taiwanese society? What were the biggest culture shocks going from Taiwan to the US.

  5. 你來自台灣哪裡?

    全台灣最好吃的夜市小吃是什麼?

Enjoy my college level Chinese studied in Taiwan haha, rusty as heck now

  6. Why ask another Taiwanese questions when I can just ask myself

If I meet another Taiwanese I tend to ask them where they’re from, usually they say one of the big cities like Taipei, Tainan, or Taichung. I’ve yet to meet anyone say Kaohsiung fwiw.

I also ask them how satisfied they are with the food out here, just about every Taiwanese I’ve met has stated they sorely miss the food they had back in Taiwan and find local food selection kind of disappointing sometimes, but chalk that up to personal preference and maybe nostalgia. You can’t find good authentic Taiwanese food for cheap here. If it’s authentic and good, it’s probably expensive and it ruins your enjoyment of it.
