The college that I’m (17 MTF) planning on going to is having an event for admitted students in my state tonight at a restaurant, I really want to make some new friends but idk how to start conversations with people. Please help.

  1. it’s good that you’re going to an event where almost everyone there will be in the same position — eager to make friends before college, don’t know anyone else, maybe a bit nervous. a few very easy topics to break the ice could be asking what their major is, what area of your state they’re from, if they plan on joining any clubs. these all can inspire further conversation and follow up questions! i also like to compliment people a lot, but this is best focused on an article of clothing like a cool t shirt or shoes. good luck, just remember a lot of people will also be nervous, and will probably be thankful that you approached them to talk!

  2. Ask lots of questions and be interested in the answers. People like talking about themselves. Remember that everyone will be feeling a bit awkward and will be happy to chat to new faces.
