I recently came to the realisation that everyone around me is speaking in code.

I’ve been unaware of this my whole life and it’s hit me hard that I must appear incredibly stupid(or potentially have a learning difficulty says google).

Does anyone have any tips on how to go about improving this ability?

I’ve done some basic research on critical thinking I’m just not sure if the two are linked.

Any help would be really appreciated.

  1. I felt this when I tried molly. It’s a really isolating and lonely feeling. I don’t think I have autism because I have no sensory differences. I think I was just sort of left behind at an early age and now i’m locked out forever.

  2. It’s a cultural thing. How we grow up tends to give context. Each enviroment (subculture, country, family, hobby groups, friend group, etc.) tend to have their own “accent/lingo” which might not be understood from the outside. Like the word “farming” does have a different meaning to someone that plays video games than to someone who doesn’t know about video games.

The only thing you can do is being exposed to the context and figure it out over time, aks them to elaborate or maybe parafrase the stuff how you understood it and ask if you understood it right.

Indirectly the literature classes tried to teach the cultural background of the country.

  3. The vast majority of people don’t say exactly what they mean.
Example: When the kid at McDonald’s asks you”How are you doing today?” They really don’t want to know your feelings. When someone responds “I’m good thanks!” They probably aren’t.
Don’t worry about it from random people, if close friends and family do this it can be an issue
