Have lived in the US and have American family and just really, really don’t understand how & why americans use outside shoes in/ on their bed. Very common to lie down on a bed with shoes on. Have even seen people going under covers with shoes on. Why? And how do you get people to not do it in your house? Asking seems to work only occassionally.

  1. Assuming good faith: Since your post seems to imply you have witnessed this in person, what did they say when you asked them?

If you are the host, just ask people to take shoes off when they enter. Most people get the hint if they see half a dozen pairs of shoes by an entrance but you can state as much. Its your home.

  2. I’ve never seen anyone use shoes under covers in my life. That is the only data point I can contribute.

  3. The only time I’ve laid down with shoes on period, be it a bed or the couch is when I have hurt myself doing something outside. I have never heard of anyone wearing shoes to bed.

  4. >Have even seen people going under covers with shoes on. Why? And how do you get people to not do it in your house? Asking seems to work only occassionally.

I would freak out if I saw someone doing this in their own house, let alone my house.

has this genuinely happened to you? more than once??? I find that incredibly hard to believe.

  5. I don’t think I’ve ever work shoes to bed, outside of some Army naps.

I’ve never heard of this, have never seen it (well, aside from a time or two my wife maaaay have still had high heels on …. But we weren’t sleeping.), and don’t know of anyone ever doing this.

  6. I’ve laid down on our comforter with shoes on. We have dogs that sleep on our bed. So anything that’s not under the sheets is fair game to get dirty lol. We wash our linens twice a week though.

  7. This sounds like you were around people with very unusual shoe habits and assumed that was all Americans. Most Americans do not wear shoes in their bed, most would probably find that dirty and disgusting

  8. Was googling and apparently am by far the first person to ask this; some Netflix shows have had people going into bed with shoes (and others saying how disgusting it is). But shoes on beds seems pretty common? 🤔

  9. Heck, if you fell asleep/passed out when you had shoes on when I was in college it was fair game to draw a penis on your face with marker.

  10. > Have lived in the US and have American family and just really, really don’t understand how & why americans use outside shoes in/ on their bed.

Yeah, why does your family do this? They’re certainly an outlier. If they’re your family and you say “have lived in the US” that suggests that you’ve lived elsewhere or your family is from elsewhere, where is that? Wearing shoes in bed is 100000% not normal here. You should ask your family why they do this.

    > Very common to lie down on a bed with shoes on

    It’s not.

    > Have even seen people going under covers with shoes on.

Where? On TV? I don’t believe you’ve seen this often in real life.

    > And how do you get people to not do it in your house?

A pile of shoes at the door like everyone else I know.

Americans tend to remove shoes in their homes, especially in northern/wintry/wet climates because I don’t want to clean my floor every day. Every home here has a mud room, a utility room, a garage, an entry area of some kind where your shoes, coats, scarves, etc go before you enter the living space.

Honestly this post sounds like bullshit.

  11. I would never allow this, same goes for furniture if you’re one of those tiny bendy people always sitting on their own feet.

  12. I happen to know two people who have slept in bed with shoes on, however both only did so as a result of severe PTSD. They didn’t consider it a “normal” thing to do, but it was just a result of their hyper-vigilance. Other than those two friends, I’ve never seen people sleeping in bed with shoes on.

  13. I would never sleep in my bed with shoes on. I’ve never been with anyone that has kept their shoes on in bed. I have never seen anyone aside from very little kids on a bed with shoes. Source: lived in America my whole life over 40 years.

  14. I have never heard or seen that ever.

Have you ever considered the possibility that your relatives could just be odd and not the norm?

  15. I have fallen asleep with shoes on in bed twice in my life.

Once I came home from surgery, I managed to make it to bed and slept for 2 days.
Once in Thialand, I got back to the hotel after work, and taking my boots off I just fell asleep. Turns out there IS a limit on how little sleep your body will let you get away with.

  16. It’s a big country, I’ve seen a lot of weird things. But just because you see a weird thing on your first visit to America doesn’t mean it’s a common thing.

In all my life I have never seen someone wear their shoes in bed.

Except in porn. In porn women wear high heels in bed, and frankly, I think that is weird.

  17. I’ve never seen anyone with shoes on in, or on a bed. Maybe house slippers. Never shoes.

  18. I’ve never seen this done especially on a bed. You must have met a weird person lol. One family does not equate 350 million people.

  19. > Very common to lie down on a bed with shoes on.

In my experience this is not common whatsoever

    > Have even seen people going under covers with shoes on.

I cannot think of a single instance in my life where this has occurred.

    > Asking seems to work only occassionally.

You need some better friends if they come over to your place, crawl into your bed with their shoes on, and then take a nap lmao. I’m sorry, but this sounds so unrealistic I’m having trouble believing this is something that happens to you.

  20. > Very common to lie down on a bed with shoes on.

    No, it absolutely is not.

The only time I’ve ever seen someone sleeping in a piece of furniture designed for sleep (i.e. bed, cot, hammock) was when I was in the military and we were on call for instantaneous response. I have never seen it at all in the civilian world.

  21. We don’t. You’re making this up, or you associate with uniquely strange people.

    > really don’t understand how & why **americans** use outside shoes in/ on their bed

Another tip: The way you worded this is going to come off as accusatory and problematic. When folks say “Why do X people,” it’s generally taken as an assumption about EVERYONE that fits the description of “X people,” even if you didn’t mean that.

There are 360 million of us, and this wording assumes we are all the same. If you know/associate with 100 Americans, that makes up 0.00000028% of our population. Generally not a good approach to assume that your experience with Americans is applicable to all.

  22. > Very common to lie down on a bed with shoes on.

Uh…what? This is news to me. This sounds like your family may just be odd?

  23. I’m not trying to be rude but I assume your only knowledge of us is TV because that’s the only place you see that trope

  24. Look, I know there’s a whole thing about “Americans wear shoes inside? Oh the humanity!”

But really? In bed? Is this a troll post?
