Posting this year because the reddit sub of Tinnitus is pretty small.

So I have tinnitus for a few years now and ot has severly impacted my studies. Because I cant concentrate I have to quit and take a job but I think it will impact my work as well.

So men with tinnitus, what job do you do and how does tinnitus affect your job/life? What is the story.

  1. I have had tinnitus since I was 14 (so about 16 years).

At this point, I dont even notice it unless I am focusing on it. It basically becomes background noise most of the time.

  2. I’m used to it so it’s just background noise that I only notice if the room is super quiet or if something reminds me of it. It’s annoying when I’m fixated on it but overall it hasn’t really interfered significantly in life.

  3. I had it forty years.

Then I had my hearing tested and was told I need hearing aids in both ears.

Got set up with a pair of Signia aids. I am now hearing many sounds I’ve never heard before and the tinnitus is completely gone.

  4. I’ve had tinnitus for about 30 years. It’s a low level, high frequency hum that I can always hear but it doesn’t bother me so much unless I’m in silence. For this reason I sleep with a noise source, like an air filter, or in summer I’ll open the bedroom window as I live next to a river that provides some useful white noise. I get the most peaceful sleep when there’s heavy rain outside.

When I do notice it day-to-day is when it sort of glitches. The noise level will very suddenly increase in one ear and the pitch drops by a couple of octaves. Over the next hour or so it will go gradually quieter and the pitch will slowly rise again. This happens maybe a couple of times per month.

I work as a research scientist and am rarely in silence at work so it doesn’t affect my concentration there. I find it hard to sleep over at someone’s house if their house is too quiet, but I have an hour-long MP3 of red noise on my phone which can play if I struggle.

  5. You didn’t even post in the tinitus sub just to gather their (albeit small) feedback?
