I (22F) was diagnosed less than two weeks ago with ADHD after going a long period of time assuming something was wrong with me. When I told a friend (17NB) that knew me for over 10 years, their reaction was essentially “I had a feeling. It’s very obvious in your case.”

They later told me that both my parents (51M and 60F) and siblings (17F and 25M) also show lots of indicators for ADHD. I hadn’t considered it much throughout my life since their behavior seemed normal to me, but after thinking about it for an extended period of time, they’re right.

How would I bring this up? It seems strange to just go “hey, we both have a learning disability.” But it’d be cruel to sit on this information when it could very well benefit their lives.

TL;DR: I recently got diagnosed with ADHD and realized everyone in my family shows multiple indicators for ADHD, but I don’t know how to go about telling them they probably have ADHD as well.

  1. I got diagnosed because my sister got diagnosed & told me I had it worse than she did.

She just told me, “Turns out I have ADHD & Adderall is a game-changer. You & dad definitely have it. See a shrink.”

I did, got medicated, told my dad (who has it just as bad if not worse than me) to seriously get screened, and he accepted that he probably had it, but was already retired so didn’t care to pursue it.

My mom was initially resistant to the idea, but she’s a nurse-nerd & was quickly won over when I sent her a few peer-reviewed articles
